These are tips you can't live without.
Success with google adwords is all about quality score. It's all about tracking your campaigns and modifying them to make them their best. By creating clickable ads your ads will cost less and your quality score will go up. Create tightly grouped sets of keywords that are laser targeted.
Make sure you are targeting the exact geographical locations you need and want. Don't run campaigns that have both search and content network ads. You should split test atleast 2 ads in each ad group. Low impression keywords (keywords that don't get many impressions at all) can negatively impact your campaign. Always use conversion tracking, this will save you a lot of money.

If your click thru rates for your ads are low, google will lower your quality score. The higher your ctr the better, the key to a good ctr is to have an ad that matches your keywords and your landing page.
Use tightly organised adgroups, it is better to have ad groups with less keywords and have those keywords targeted to your ads and landing pages.
